About
The Th3rdwave Awards is an annual celebration created to promote, encourage and honour the efforts independent coffee shops and coffee roasters make to move coffee forward in Canada since 2017.
Why it matters in 2020
This year is far from normal. Given the pandemic we thought of postponing the annual celebration, but we believe there is always good in bad. Although there is little to cheer for, there’s still a lot to celebrate.
In the last year, small businesses had to continuously adapt to changing norms and rules for their own survival. The fact that most independent coffee shops are still standing and moving forward with their business is an incredible achievement.This is a true testament to their passion for coffee.
More than ever, it is our responsibility to celebrate their efforts!
There will be votes. There will be winners. But this year’s celebration is about compassion, instead of competition.

A panel formed by coffee bloggers, photographers, and baristas; all dedicated to the exploration of coffee on daily basis.
Nominees
A business can only be nominated by the jury
A business can only be nominated once per category
A business cannot be nominated in more than 3 categories
A business cannot be nominated in a category, if it won the previous year.

Criteria
The nominee has to be owned by an independent person or group
The nominee has to be owned by a resident of the community, city or province.
The nominee has to sell fair-trade, specialty coffee.
The nominee has to engage in coffee activities on a daily basis.
