The Mogiana region, split between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, is the most renowned of three major Brazilian coffee growing regions. This region has rolling hills and uneven terrain, which leads to farms being small to medium in size.
This coffee is sourced from cousins Sylvia & Clayton Mabelli and their farm Sitio Anhumas in Vale da Grama, Mogiana. It is a well run family farm of the Mabelli family, Italian descendants who moved to Brazil in the 1930’s to work on coffee plantations. The word Anhumas is a big black bird that used to be prevalent in the area and gives the name of the valley. Clayton says that with a recent mind-set switch to specialty coffee farming, the family has been investing in more efficient farming practices, such as planting shade trees that grow avocados to diversify their income sources.
The resulting cup reminds us of dark chocolate and almond.
