Sambewe

Sambewe Farmers Group, founded in 2007 spans 1.6 hectares and has 344 members. Farmers established the group as an Agriculture Marketing Cooperative Society (aka AMCOS).

Tanzania is now selling its coffee by means of a centralised auction system, intended to mimic the Ethiopian model. The policy was intended to allow farmers to get paid more for their crops. However, this system does not incentivize exporters to make investments in farms since they can not make exclusive contracts with farmers that will allow them to see a return on their investment in future years. Ibero is a large trading company under the Neuman Group umbrella that has adapted to this new model and is trying to invest and push the Tanzanian coffee industry forward. They match whatever investment the co-ops and farmers are willing to invest in their own farms. They have paid for eight pulpers to be used by the largest AMCOS in the region to reduce the amount of water wastage (as water is scarce in the area) and allow for cleaner, more transparent coffees. They also contribute to local communities by building schools; Providing teachers, construction costs, and access to clean water for students.
