Hunapu

Sacatepéquez is a department of Central Guatemala. It is largely mountainous and hosts a chain of active & dormant volcanoes including Acatenago, Volcan De Agua, and Volcan de Fuego. The volcanic soil and high altitudes make for ideal coffee growing conditions.

This coffee is sourced from the Hunapu community of small coffee producers near the slopes of the Volcán de Agua in Antigua, Sacatepéquez. The community was once only a small collection of large farms, but the lands have since been divided up amongst the children of the original owners as is common in traditional in Guatemalan culture. They band together to bring all of their crops to the Bella Vista mill in order to have them processed and prepared for saale on the global market. Cherries are delivered to the mill every day where the coffee is washed and fermented for 24 hours before it is dried on their massive patio.

The resulting cup reminds us of brown sugar, red apple, and dried apricot.
