Magdalena is a northern department of Colombia. Named after the Magdalena River that flows northward through the western half of the country, it is in its valley that coffee is farmed.
This coffee is sourced from Helmut Ullrich at his El Origen farm in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena. After travelling through Central and South America, Helmut left his home in Austria to pursue his dream of living sustainably in nature. He purchased land in Colombia and discovered neglected coffee plants on it. With the help of Pedro, whose family had lived on the land for years, Helmut began to cultivate coffee. Six years later, Pedro is the farm manager, and Helmut employs three other main workers (Mono, Vincente, and Julio), as well as seasonal workers from the region and neighbouring Venezuela. Helmut proudly states that all of his workers are paid three times the national average wage.
The resulting cup reminds us of milk chocolate, pear & macadamia nut.
